4 Days Marrakech Desert Tour – Merzouga and Draa Valley

Your 4 days Marrakech desert tour begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. We leave the city behind and travel toward the High Atlas Mountains through the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass. As we climb higher, the scenery changes from the busy streets of Marrakech to mountain valleys, Berber villages and impressive rocky landscapes. We stop at several viewpoints so you can enjoy the panoramic scenery and take photographs. After crossing the High Atlas, we descend toward the southern side of Morocco and continue to the famous fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou. We explore its narrow streets and traditional earthen buildings while learning about its history and its role on the ancient caravan routes.

After the visit, we continue to Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara. The journey then continues through the palm oasis of Skoura, where traditional kasbahs stand among thousands of palm trees. We drive through the Valley of Roses before reaching the dramatic Dades Valley. Along the road, the landscape changes from green oasis to dry mountains and spectacular rock formations. In the late afternoon, we arrive at your accommodation in the Dades Valley. You will have time to relax, enjoy dinner and take in the peaceful mountain atmosphere. This first day introduces you to the diverse landscapes of southern Morocco and prepares you for the Sahara adventure ahead.

After breakfast, we leave the Dades Valley and continue toward the impressive Todra Gorge. The road passes through traditional villages and green palm oases before reaching the towering limestone cliffs of the gorge. We stop here for a walk and time to appreciate the dramatic scenery. The narrow canyon creates a spectacular contrast between the high rock walls and the small river running through the valley. We then continue toward Erfoud, a town famous for fossils, dates and traditional workshops. As we approach the Sahara, the landscape becomes drier and more open. We cross the Ziz Valley, where rows of palm trees form a green ribbon between the mountains. The journey continues toward Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes.

In the afternoon, we meet the camel guides and begin our camel trek into the Sahara. The golden dunes stretch in every direction and create an unforgettable desert landscape. During the trek, we stop at a high dune to enjoy the sunset and watch the colours of the sand change as the sun disappears. After sunset, we continue to the desert camp. A traditional Moroccan dinner is served in the evening, followed by Berber music around the campfire. Far from the noise and lights of the cities, you can relax and enjoy the silence of the Sahara. The night in the desert camp gives you the opportunity to admire the stars and experience the unique atmosphere of Erg Chebbi.

Today is dedicated to discovering the Merzouga desert and the surrounding area. We recommend waking early to enjoy the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The first light creates beautiful colours across the sand and offers excellent opportunities for photography. After breakfast, we begin a local excursion around the desert. We visit Khamlia village, known for its Gnawa music and cultural heritage. Here, you can meet local musicians and learn more about the traditions of the community. We then continue toward the desert landscapes surrounding Erg Chebbi, where you can see nomadic areas, small oases and changing views of the dunes. Depending on the season and local conditions, there may also be an opportunity to visit a nomadic family and learn about their traditional lifestyle. We continue to Rissani, an important historic town and former commercial center of the region.

The town is known for its traditional market, local products and connection with the ancient caravan routes. After exploring the area, we return toward Merzouga. You will have time to relax at your accommodation and enjoy the peaceful desert surroundings. The afternoon can be used for a walk near the dunes or simply to rest after the previous days of travel. As evening approaches, the golden colours of Erg Chebbi create another beautiful desert scene. Spending a second night near Merzouga allows you to experience the Sahara without rushing and gives you more time to appreciate its landscapes, traditions and peaceful atmosphere.

After breakfast, we leave Merzouga and begin the return journey toward Marrakech. Instead of following exactly the same road as the first days, we travel through the spectacular landscapes of the Draa Valley. The route crosses desert plateaus and mountain areas before reaching one of southern Morocco’s most famous palm oases. The Draa Valley is known for its long chain of palm groves, traditional villages and ancient kasbahs. Along the way, we make scenic stops so you can appreciate the contrast between the dry mountains and the green oasis below. We continue through the town of Zagora and follow the Draa Valley before heading toward the Anti-Atlas and the High Atlas regions. The journey offers a final opportunity to see the changing landscapes of southern Morocco.

As we continue north, the scenery gradually becomes greener and the road eventually returns toward the High Atlas. We cross mountain roads and make stops when appropriate for photographs and refreshments. The drive is long, but it provides a fascinating overview of the different regions you have experienced during the tour. By late afternoon or evening, we arrive back in Marrakech. Your four-day Marrakech desert adventure comes to an end with drop-off at your hotel or riad. This final day completes a journey that has taken you from the Red City through historic kasbahs, mountain valleys and the Sahara Desert before returning through the spectacular Draa Valley.
