3 Days Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour

Your Marrakech Merzouga tour begins early in the morning when I meet you at your accommodation in Marrakech. We leave the busy streets of the Red City behind and drive south toward the High Atlas Mountains. As your local guide, I will explain the landscapes, villages, and traditions that you discover during the journey. The scenery changes quickly as we climb the winding mountain roads. You will see small Berber villages, green valleys, rocky slopes, and traditional houses built into the mountains. We normally make several stops so you can take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and appreciate the changing scenery.

We then continue toward the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass. At the highest points of the road, you can enjoy wide views across the High Atlas Mountains and the valleys below. After crossing the pass, the landscape becomes drier and warmer. This change gives you a first impression of southern Morocco. I will also explain how local families live in these mountain communities and how they have adapted to the dry climate.

Our main cultural visit today is Ait Ben Haddou. We walk through the narrow streets of this historic fortified village and discover its traditional earthen buildings. I will tell you about the old caravan routes that once connected Marrakech with the Sahara and helped merchants transport goods across Morocco. Ait Ben Haddou also became famous because several international films and television productions used the village as a location. After the visit, we continue to Ouarzazate, often known as the gateway to the desert.

From Ouarzazate, we drive through the palm oasis of Skoura. The contrast between the green palm trees and the dry surrounding landscape makes this area especially beautiful. We then continue through the Valley of Roses toward the Dades Valley. Along the road, you will see old kasbahs, traditional villages, cultivated fields, and red rock formations. By the afternoon, we arrive in the Dades Valley. You can relax at your accommodation, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, and prepare for the next day of your Sahara adventure.

After breakfast, we leave the Dades Valley and continue toward Tinghir and the spectacular Todra Gorge. The road passes through mountains, palm groves, and small villages. As your guide, I will explain how local communities have used water from the valleys to grow dates, vegetables, and other crops for generations. As we approach the gorge, the landscape becomes more dramatic. Huge limestone cliffs rise on both sides of the road and create one of the most impressive natural landscapes in southern Morocco.

At Todra Gorge, we stop for a walk between the enormous rock walls. The morning light often creates beautiful colours on the cliffs, making this an excellent place for photographs. You can walk at your own pace, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, and learn more about the local environment. After the visit, we continue toward Erfoud, a town famous for fossils, dates, and traditional stone workshops. This region also marks the beginning of the landscapes that lead toward the Sahara Desert.

We then cross the Ziz Valley, where green palm groves appear between rocky mountains. The road gradually becomes quieter and the landscape becomes wider and more open. Finally, we reach Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. This is one of the most exciting moments of the journey because you can suddenly see the Sahara stretching in front of you.

In the afternoon, we meet the camel guides and begin our camel trek into the dunes. I will help you get comfortable before you start riding across the sand. As the sun moves lower, the colours of the desert change from gold to orange and red. We stop at a beautiful viewpoint to watch the sunset. Afterwards, we continue to the desert camp, where you enjoy a traditional dinner and an evening around the fire with Berber music. Finally, you can relax under the clear desert sky and enjoy a peaceful night in the Sahara.

Today begins early because the sunrise over Erg Chebbi is one of the most beautiful moments of the entire journey. I recommend getting up before sunrise and walking to a nearby dune with me or with the camp team. As the first light appears, the colours of the sand slowly change from dark shadows to warm golden tones. After enjoying this peaceful moment, we return to the camp for breakfast. You can then prepare for the long but beautiful journey back to Marrakech.

We leave the desert and travel toward Rissani, one of the historic towns of the Tafilalet region. Rissani played an important role in the old caravan trade, and its traditional market remains an interesting place to discover local life. If the market is open during our visit, we can take a short walk through the souk and see traditional products, spices, dates, and everyday goods. I will explain the importance of this region and its connection with the old desert trading routes.

After Rissani, we continue toward the Draa Valley. This large oasis stretches between the desert landscapes and the Anti-Atlas Mountains. You will see thousands of palm trees, old kasbahs, and small villages along the valley. I will explain how the oasis has supported local communities for centuries and how farmers continue to grow dates and other crops here. We then continue toward Ouarzazate while enjoying the changing landscapes along the road.

From Ouarzazate, we begin the final drive toward Marrakech. We cross the High Atlas once more and follow the winding road toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. During the journey, you can relax and enjoy the mountain scenery after three days of adventure. We normally arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon or evening, depending on traffic and road conditions.
