5 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour with 2 Nights in Merzouga

Day 1 – Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley

Your 5 days Marrakech to Fes desert tour begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. We leave the busy streets of the Red City and drive toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs gradually toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, one of the most scenic mountain roads in Morocco. Along the way, your driver will make stops so you can admire the panoramic views, photograph traditional Berber villages and observe the changing mountain landscape. After crossing the High Atlas, we continue toward Ait Ben Haddou. This historic fortified village is one of the best-known kasbah sites in Morocco and was once an important stop on ancient caravan routes.

You will have time to walk through the narrow streets and explore the traditional earthen buildings. We then continue toward Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the Sahara. After a short stop, we travel through the palm oasis of Skoura, famous for its kasbahs and green palm groves. The road continues through the Valley of Roses before reaching the spectacular Dades Valley. The landscape becomes more rugged, with red cliffs, rocky mountains and small oasis areas. In the afternoon, we arrive at your accommodation in the Dades Valley. You can relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery before dinner. This first day offers a wonderful introduction to southern Morocco and prepares you for the Sahara experience ahead.

Day 2 – Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, we leave the Dades Valley and continue toward Todra Gorge. The road passes through small villages, palm groves and dramatic mountain scenery before reaching the famous canyon. Todra Gorge is known for its enormous limestone walls and peaceful atmosphere. You will have time to walk through part of the gorge and enjoy the impressive scenery. We then continue toward Erfoud, a desert town famous for fossils, dates and traditional workshops. From Erfoud, we follow the Ziz Valley, where green palm trees contrast beautifully with the dry mountains and rocky landscape. As we approach Merzouga, the landscape gradually changes and the first golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear. In the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga and prepare for your first Sahara experience.

You will take a camel trek across the dunes toward the desert camp. The journey becomes especially beautiful as the sun begins to set and the dunes change colour. After reaching the camp, you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner. The evening includes Berber music around the campfire and time to admire the stars. You will spend your first night in the Merzouga desert camp. Because this tour includes two nights in Merzouga, you do not need to leave the desert the following morning. Instead, you will have another full day to explore the Sahara and its surrounding villages.

Day 3 – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Nomad Families – Rissani – Merzouga

Today is dedicated entirely to discovering the Merzouga desert region. Having two nights in Merzouga allows you to enjoy the Sahara at a relaxed pace. We recommend waking early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The first sunlight creates beautiful colours across the sand and provides excellent opportunities for photographs. After breakfast, we begin a 4×4 excursion around the desert. Our first important stop is Khamlia, a small village famous for Gnawa music. You can meet local musicians and learn about the cultural traditions of the community. We then continue toward areas where nomadic families live. When possible, you can meet a nomadic family and learn about their lifestyle, traditions and daily life in the desert.

The excursion continues toward Rissani, an historic town connected with the old caravan routes of the Sahara. Its traditional market offers an interesting view of local life and regional products. After exploring the area, we return toward Merzouga. The afternoon is free for relaxation. You can walk near the dunes, enjoy the camp surroundings or simply take time to appreciate the silence of the Sahara. In the evening, you can watch another sunset over Erg Chebbi before returning to the camp for dinner. You will spend your second night in Merzouga under the stars. This extra night makes the desert experience more comfortable and gives you enough time to discover the region without rushing.

Day 4 – Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes

After breakfast, we leave Merzouga and begin the long but beautiful journey toward Fes. We first travel through the desert landscapes around Erfoud and continue toward the Ziz Valley. This valley is famous for its green palm oasis surrounded by dramatic cliffs and dry mountains. We make stops along the route to enjoy the scenery and take photographs. The road then climbs gradually toward the Middle Atlas Mountains. We continue through Midelt, a town located between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas ranges and known for its agricultural landscapes and apple production. After Midelt, the scenery becomes greener as we approach the cedar forests near Azrou.

This region is home to the famous Barbary macaques and offers a completely different landscape from the Sahara. We continue toward Ifrane, often called the Switzerland of Morocco because of its alpine-style architecture, clean streets and mountain setting. A short stop allows you to enjoy the atmosphere before continuing toward Fes. During the final part of the journey, the landscape changes again as we approach the ancient imperial city. We arrive in Fes in the evening and transfer you to your hotel or riad. After several days through the mountains, valleys and desert, arriving in Fes creates a fascinating contrast. Your fourth night is spent in Fes, giving you the opportunity to rest before discovering the city on the final day.

Day 5 – Fes – Guided Visit and End of Tour

After breakfast, your final day is dedicated to discovering Fes, one of Morocco’s most historic and culturally important cities. Depending on your departure time, you can enjoy a guided visit through the old medina of Fes el-Bali. The ancient medina is famous for its narrow streets, traditional markets, historic mosques, madrasas and artisan workshops. Walking through the medina gives you the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of one of Morocco’s oldest urban centres. Your guide can introduce you to the city’s history, architecture and traditional crafts.

You may visit important viewpoints overlooking the old city and explore areas known for leatherwork, ceramics and handmade products. The visit can also include stops near the famous tanneries and historic religious schools. After the guided visit, you will have free time depending on your departure schedule. You can enjoy a final Moroccan lunch, explore more of the city or return to your accommodation to collect your luggage. Your 5 days Marrakech to Fes desert tour ends in Fes with drop-off at your hotel, riad or another agreed location. This journey combines the mountains, kasbahs, valleys and Sahara dunes of southern Morocco with the history and culture of Fes, making it an excellent choice for travellers who want to experience several different sides of Morocco in one trip.
