5 Days Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour

Day 1 – Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley

Your 5-day Marrakech desert tour begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad. We leave Marrakech and drive toward the High Atlas Mountains, following the winding road toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The journey offers beautiful views of mountain villages, deep valleys and traditional Berber landscapes. We make several stops along the way so you can enjoy the scenery and take photographs. After crossing the mountains, we continue toward Ait Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most famous fortified villages. This historic ksar once stood along important caravan routes crossing the southern regions of Morocco. You will have time to walk through its narrow streets, explore the traditional earthen buildings and enjoy panoramic views from the higher part of the village. We then continue to Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara and famous for its kasbahs and film studios. After a short visit or photo stop, the journey continues through the palm oasis of Skoura.

This area is known for its green palm groves and historic kasbahs surrounded by desert landscapes. We then travel through the Valley of Roses and continue toward the spectacular Dades Valley. Along the way, the landscape changes from mountains to rocky plateaus and green oasis areas. In the afternoon, we arrive at your accommodation in the Dades Valley. You will have time to relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery before dinner. This first day combines mountain landscapes, cultural heritage and oasis scenery and prepares you for the desert adventure ahead.

Day 2 – Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, we leave the Dades Valley and continue toward the impressive Todra Gorge. The road passes through traditional villages, palm groves and dramatic mountain landscapes before reaching the narrow canyon. The huge limestone cliffs create a spectacular natural setting, and you will have time to walk through the gorge and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. We continue toward Erfoud, a town famous for fossils, dates and local workshops. From Erfoud, the road follows the Ziz Valley, where green palm plantations stand between dry mountains and rocky landscapes. As we approach Merzouga, the scenery becomes increasingly desert-like and the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to appear on the horizon. In the afternoon, we reach the Merzouga area and prepare for your first desert experience.

You can enjoy a camel trek across the dunes toward the Sahara camp. Riding through Erg Chebbi at sunset is one of the highlights of the journey. The changing colours of the sand create beautiful views as the sun goes down. After reaching the camp, you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner. The evening is spent around the campfire with Berber music and time to admire the clear desert sky. Tonight is your second night of the tour and your first night in the Sahara. Instead of continuing immediately, you will stay in Merzouga and have another full day to discover the desert.

Day 3 – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Nomad Families – Rissani – Merzouga

Today is dedicated to discovering Merzouga and the surrounding Sahara region. Because you are spending two nights in Merzouga, the day can be enjoyed at a comfortable pace. We recommend waking early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The first light creates beautiful colours across the sand and offers excellent opportunities for photographs. After breakfast, we begin a local excursion around the desert. We visit Khamlia, a small village known for Gnawa music and its rich cultural heritage. You can meet local musicians and learn more about their traditions. We then continue toward the desert areas where nomadic families live. When possible, we can meet a nomadic family and learn about their traditional lifestyle in the Sahara. The experience provides a different perspective on life in the desert and the relationship between people, animals and the surrounding environment.

We continue toward Rissani, an important historic town connected with the ancient caravan routes. Its traditional market is one of the most interesting places to observe local life and regional products. After the visit, we return toward Merzouga. The afternoon is free to relax near the dunes, walk around the camp or enjoy the peaceful desert atmosphere. You may also choose to enjoy the dunes before another beautiful sunset. In the evening, we have dinner at the desert camp and spend our second night in Merzouga under the stars. This extra night makes the experience more relaxed and gives you more time to enjoy the Sahara.

Day 4 – Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Nkob – Agdz – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate

After breakfast, we leave Merzouga and begin our return journey toward Ouarzazate. The road first crosses the desert landscapes around Erfoud before reaching the Ziz Valley. This beautiful valley is famous for its long palm groves, dramatic cliffs and traditional villages. We continue south and then travel toward Nkob, a small oasis town known for its many kasbahs and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The landscape gradually changes as we enter the Draa Valley, one of the most important oasis regions in Morocco. The valley stretches for many kilometres and is filled with palm trees, agricultural fields and traditional settlements. We travel through Agdz, an important stop along the historic caravan routes connecting the Sahara with the north of Morocco.

The road offers beautiful views of the Draa Valley and the surrounding mountains. We continue toward Ouarzazate in the afternoon. Depending on the timing, there may be an opportunity to stop for photographs or enjoy a short walk in the town. After the long desert journey, you will have time to relax at your accommodation in Ouarzazate. Dinner and overnight accommodation are provided. This day offers a different side of Morocco, moving from the dry Sahara landscape into the green oasis environment of the Draa Valley. It is also a perfect transition before crossing the Atlas Mountains again on the final day.

Day 5 – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Telouet – Tizi n’Tichka – Marrakech

After breakfast, we leave Ouarzazate and begin the final day of our Marrakech desert tour. Before crossing the High Atlas Mountains, we continue toward the historic area of Ait Ben Haddou and then follow the route toward Telouet. The Telouet area is known for its old kasbah and spectacular mountain scenery. The road provides beautiful views of valleys, rocky slopes and traditional villages. As we continue, we reach the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and begin the ascent through the High Atlas. We make several stops along the road to enjoy the panoramic views and take photographs. The landscape changes constantly as the road climbs and then descends toward the Marrakech plain.

Along the way, you can see traditional Berber villages built into the mountain slopes and terraced agricultural fields. We continue toward Marrakech and arrive in the afternoon or early evening, depending on road conditions and the stops made during the journey. Your 5-day Marrakech desert tour ends with drop-off at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. This journey gives you the opportunity to experience several different landscapes in Morocco, from the High Atlas Mountains to ancient kasbahs, green valleys and the golden dunes of Merzouga. The two nights in the Sahara also allow you to enjoy the desert at a slower pace and experience Merzouga beyond a simple overnight stop.
