4 Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour
Day 1 – Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley
Your 4 days Marrakech to Fes desert tour begins in Marrakech in the morning. Your private driver will pick you up from your hotel or riad before you leave the city and begin the journey toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass, where mountain landscapes, Berber villages and panoramic viewpoints create a beautiful introduction to southern Morocco. We make several stops along the way so you can enjoy the scenery and take photographs. After crossing the mountains, we continue toward the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. This historic fortified village sits along the former caravan routes and is one of the most impressive examples of traditional earthen architecture in Morocco.
You will have time to walk through its narrow streets and explore the old ksar. After the visit, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the Sahara. The journey then passes through Skoura, an oasis famous for its palm groves and historic kasbahs. We continue through the Valley of Roses before reaching the spectacular Dades Valley. The landscape becomes more dramatic as red cliffs, rocky mountains and green oasis areas appear along the road. In the afternoon, we arrive at your accommodation in the Dades Valley. You will have time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before dinner. This first day combines mountain scenery, Moroccan history and oasis landscapes while preparing you for the desert adventure that begins the following day.
Day 2 – Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga – Sahara Desert Camp
After breakfast, we leave the Dades Valley and continue toward the impressive Todra Gorge. The road passes through traditional villages and palm-filled valleys before reaching the dramatic canyon. The towering limestone walls create one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in southern Morocco. We stop for a walk through the gorge and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before continuing toward Erfoud. This town is well known for fossils, dates and traditional workshops. From Erfoud, we continue toward the Ziz Valley, where green palm groves contrast beautifully with the surrounding dry mountains. As we approach Merzouga, the landscape changes once again and the first golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.
In the afternoon, you begin your camel trek into the Sahara. Riding through the dunes gives you a wonderful opportunity to experience the desert at a slower pace. Your camel guide leads you toward the desert camp while the colours of the sand change with the afternoon light. Before reaching the camp, you stop on a high dune to watch the sunset. After sunset, you continue to the camp where a traditional Moroccan dinner awaits you. The evening includes Berber music around the campfire and time to admire the stars. You spend your second night of the tour in the Sahara Desert Camp, surrounded by the quiet dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Day 3 – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Rissani – Merzouga Desert Camp
Today is dedicated entirely to discovering the Merzouga desert and the surrounding region. Since you will spend a second night in the Sahara, there is no need to rush and you can enjoy the desert experience at a more comfortable pace. We recommend waking early to watch the sunrise over Erg Chebbi. The first rays of sunlight create beautiful colours across the dunes and provide excellent opportunities for photographs. After breakfast, we begin a local excursion around Merzouga. We visit Khamlia, a small village famous for its Gnawa music and cultural traditions. You can meet local musicians and learn about the history and heritage of the community. We then continue through the desert landscape and visit areas where nomadic families live. When conditions allow, you may have the opportunity to meet a nomadic family and discover their traditional way of life.
We continue toward Rissani, an important historic town connected to the ancient caravan routes of the Sahara. Its traditional market offers an authentic view of local life and regional products. After exploring Rissani, we return toward Merzouga. The afternoon is free to relax near the dunes, walk around the camp area or simply enjoy the peaceful desert atmosphere. You can also take time to photograph the Erg Chebbi landscape as the light changes during the afternoon. In the evening, enjoy another traditional dinner and a second night under the desert sky. Spending two nights in the Sahara allows you to experience Merzouga without rushing and makes the desert one of the main highlights of your journey.
Day 4 – Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes
After breakfast, we leave Merzouga and begin the final journey toward Fes. We travel through the Ziz Valley, where palm groves stretch between dramatic mountain landscapes. The road gradually climbs toward the Middle Atlas Mountains and the scenery changes from desert plains to cooler mountain landscapes. We continue toward Midelt, a town located between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas ranges. This region is known for its mountain scenery, apple orchards and peaceful rural landscapes. After Midelt, the road continues through the cedar forests near Azrou. If local conditions allow, we may stop to see the famous Barbary macaques that live in this forest area. We then continue toward Ifrane, often known for its European-style architecture and alpine atmosphere.
The final part of the journey takes us toward Fes, one of Morocco’s most historic imperial cities. During the drive, you can enjoy the changing landscapes as Morocco’s desert environment gradually gives way to green mountain areas and more populated regions. We arrive in Fes in the afternoon or early evening, depending on road conditions and stops. Your 4 days Marrakech to Fes desert tour ends with drop-off at your hotel or riad in Fes. After four days of mountains, kasbahs, valleys and two unforgettable nights in the Sahara, you arrive in Fes with a unique experience of southern and central Morocco.
