3 Days Marrakech Desert to Fes Tour
Day 1 – Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – Dades Valley
Your Marrakech desert Fes tour begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. We leave the Red City and drive toward the High Atlas Mountains along the spectacular road crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. As we climb higher, the scenery changes from the urban atmosphere of Marrakech to mountain valleys, Berber villages and dramatic rocky landscapes. We make several scenic stops where you can enjoy panoramic views and take photographs. After crossing the High Atlas, we descend toward the southern side of Morocco and continue to the famous kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. Here, you will walk through the narrow lanes of the ancient fortified village and discover its traditional earthen architecture. I will explain the history of the ksar and its importance on the old caravan routes connecting the Sahara with Marrakech.
After the visit, we continue toward Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the desert. We then drive through the beautiful oasis of Skoura, known for its palm groves and traditional kasbahs. The route continues through the Valley of Roses before reaching the spectacular Dades Valley. Along the way, you can admire changing landscapes, traditional villages and impressive rock formations. In the late afternoon, we arrive at your accommodation in the Dades Valley. You will have time to relax, enjoy dinner and rest before the next day takes you deeper toward the Sahara Desert.
Day 2 – Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi
After breakfast, we leave the Dades Valley and continue toward the spectacular Todra Gorge. The road passes through traditional villages, green palm oases and rocky landscapes before reaching the impressive canyon near Tinghir. We stop at Todra Gorge so you can walk between the enormous limestone cliffs and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this natural site. After the visit, we continue toward Erfoud, a town famous for fossils, dates and traditional workshops. The landscape becomes increasingly dry as we approach the Sahara region. We cross parts of the Ziz Valley, where a long line of palm trees creates a striking contrast with the surrounding mountains and desert scenery. We then continue toward Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the afternoon, you meet the camel guides and begin your camel trek into the Sahara.
Riding across the golden dunes gives you a wonderful opportunity to experience the silence and vastness of the desert. Before reaching the camp, we stop on a high dune to watch the sunset. The colours of the sand change beautifully as the sun disappears behind the horizon. After sunset, you continue to the desert camp where a traditional Moroccan dinner awaits you. The evening usually includes Berber music and time around the campfire. Far away from city lights, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Sahara and look at the stars before spending the night in your desert camp.
Day 3 – Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes
The final day begins early with the opportunity to watch sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The first light creates beautiful colours across the sand and makes this one of the most memorable moments of the journey. After sunrise, you return to the camp for breakfast before leaving the desert. Depending on the camp arrangements, the return to Merzouga can be made by camel or 4×4. We then begin the long but scenic drive toward Fes. The route crosses the Ziz Valley and continues through changing landscapes as we gain altitude. We make panoramic stops where you can admire the palm-filled valley from above. We then continue toward Midelt, a mountain town located between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas ranges. The scenery becomes cooler and greener as we approach the cedar forests near Azrou. This area provides a strong contrast with the desert landscapes of the previous day.
We then continue toward Ifrane, a mountain town known for its gardens, clean streets and distinctive alpine-style architecture. After a short stop, we continue toward Fes. During the final part of the journey, the landscape gradually changes again as we approach the historic imperial city. By the afternoon or early evening, we arrive in Fes and drop you at your hotel or riad. Your three-day journey from Marrakech through the Moroccan Sahara to Fes ends here.
